The European Accessibility Act (EAA), which took effect in June 2025, requires companies in the EU to design digital products to be accessible. Nevertheless, many companies still treat digital accessibility as a marginal issue. The widespread assumption is that it affects only a small user group and is a special case. This assessment significantly underestimates reality.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one out of every six people worldwide lives with a disability. An estimated 70 percent of these disabilities are invisible. This means that most of those affected cannot be easily identified.
Disabilities can be divided into three categories.
Added to this are cognitive limitations, which are rarely considered. For example, a person with ADHD needs clear structure and few visual distractions. Older users benefit from larger buttons and high contrast.
These scenarios demonstrate that digital accessibility is not just a concern for a small, marginal group. It affects software for all of us at different times in our lives.
If it only works for the “standard user,” it potentially excludes millions of people. Since the EAA and BFSG took effect, it has become a compliance risk, with possible fines and distribution restrictions.
According to WebAIM’s annual analysis, around 95 percent of the most visited websites have measurable WCAG errors, which illustrates the scale of the problem. Therefore, the likelihood that your software is also affected is high. Moreover, automated scanners, which many companies rely on, only detect a fraction of the actual barriers.
Before testing and correcting, take a step back and understand what accessibility really entails. Understand what accessibility really entails. What types of barriers exist? Where is your software particularly vulnerable? Why don't automated tools alone provide a reliable overall picture?
The EAA and BFSG primarily address B2C products and services. However, B2B touchpoints may also be affected if they reach end users. Additionally, proactive accessibility improves software quality and usability.
The European Accessibility Act (EAA) is an EU directive requiring accessibility for digital products and services by June 2025. Each EU member state has passed its own national law.
