Agile organizational methods such as Scrum have become firmly established in the field of software development. Their greatest strength lies in their flexible and efficient handling of dynamic project requirements. Although agile frameworks are widely used in software development, they are still too rarely applied in other areas, such as strategic management - even though most projects today are confronted with unpredictable planning changes.
A typical example from the software life cycle shows that the biggest errors and need for change are often only discovered in the late usability validation phase. Agile teams, on the other hand, go through incrementally shorter development cycles and can react flexibly to changes in planning. In traditional companies, necessary changes at the end of a project can have devastating effects on the schedule and budget. Agile teams, on the other hand, are optimally prepared for today's dynamic market conditions.
The strengths of agile methods are particularly evident in the development of artificial intelligence (AI). The AI Act requires different process areas to work together efficiently. Incremental and repetitive checks and change processes are essential in the life cycle of AI applications. It becomes particularly complex for high-risk applications, such as in medical technology. Additional requirements apply here, such as the implementation of an AI quality management system in accordance with Article 17 and the creation of comprehensive technical documentation. Agile teams are ideally equipped to master these challenges - provided that not only software development, but also the entire management and all organizational units are agile.
Although agile methods have been proven to offer many benefits, there are currently a growing number of development teams that are turning away from agile approaches (source). However, this dissatisfaction often results from an unclean or incorrect implementation of agile principles. Agile methods are often only introduced superficially or mentioned for marketing reasons without really living them in depth. At sepp.med, however, agile methods have proven to be the key to the success of dynamic projects - not only in software development, but also in the development of software-supported medical products. Agile principles are the basis for successful collaboration in interdisciplinary teams and make it possible to react flexibly and efficiently to changing market conditions.
