Validating AI components in automotive software
Modern vehicle software increasingly contains AI-based functions, such as neural networks for object recognition and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). However, these components cannot be verified using traditional code coverage methods because their behavior is not deterministic and their decision-making processes are difficult for auditors to understand.
For approval purposes, ISO 26262 alone is no longer sufficient. ISO 21448 (SOTIF) supplements ISO 26262, requiring scenario-based validation and proof of safe behavior, even in unknown situations. ISO/PAS 8800 establishes a specific standard for AI in road vehicles.
